West Hawai'i Island Cavy Sanctuary is an animal rescue, shelter, and working research laboratory dedicated to promoting the health, welfare, happiness, and longevity of Hawai'i Island's cavy (guinea pig) population; while, at the same time, striving to reduce the overall island cavy population via public education and the promotion of responsible animal husbandry. The project is administered by Student Academic Resource Services, Inc., a Hawai'i nonprofit, educational corporation, under the direction and supervision of Uncle Philp and Aunty Ne'ne'. Student's in the STARS Homeschool Network are trained to serve as cavy technicians who are responsible for maintaining cavy environment and for monitoring cavy nutrition, health, and happiness; as well as assisting with the treatment of minor cavy injuries and illnesses. Through indepth empirical and anecdotal research, students who participate in the project gain a great deal of insight into the field of biology, anatomy, animal husbandry, veterinary science, and applied math. More importantly, students cultivate a deep respect and compassion for all life forms; no animal is ever harmed - (although they do fuss about being shampooed and getting nails trimmed, and they don't particularly like getting shots from time to time, either - yikes!)...

TEACHERS AND YOUTH LEADERS:
West Hawai'i Island Cavy Sanctuary is big on EDUCATION... We have had schools bring classes of children to visit the sanctuary; you, too, are invited to come see us. Or, we would love to come see you and bring a few of our lil piggies to visit with you. Our students are always happy to share some of their research, and vital information concerning responsible animal care, with your children.

WE SUPPORT HUMANE AND RESPONSIBLE ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
STOP Backyard Breeders - who care more about making a few bucks than they do the health and welfare of their animals.
STOP Pet Store Sale of Animals - who not only fuel the backyard breeders by providing an easy market, but who also commonly neglect an animal's vital needs in order to keep overhead down and make a few more bucks along the way - (we've got a lil guy with a forever crippled leg to prove it). Pet stores should deal in animal supplies, not animals!
STOP Allowing Your Pets to Propagate - have them spayed or neutered, or keep small pets (male & female) always separated.
STOP The Dumping of Animals - to the wild, to pet stores, to other organizations which often have them euthanized, to family/friends who really don't want/need them.
STOP Treating Animals Like Toys - a living creature is not a "plaything" for a child to enjoy until he/she becomes bored, then neglect it or throw it away like an old toy. A pet is part of the family and a "forever" family responsibility! Cavies, in particular, are extremely sensitive animals requiring a great deal of attention; they simply cannot be adequately cared for by a child.
