There are currently three options that home schooled students have
for graduating from high school and moving on to the college level. Option 1) For home schooled students on 4140 - Section B, with NO public high school attendance of at least one semester (1/2 credit): Students may only take the GED exam; NO GED preparation classes are available. DOE reasoning is that the parents have taken the responsibility for instructing their child (apparently including GED grooming). The student cannot get a HS diploma this way, only the GED. However, for most purposes, the GED is equivalent to the HS diploma. Option 2) For home schooled student on 4140, Section B, with at least one semester of public high school credit: Students may take both the preparatory classes and the GED. Students can obtain both a GED and a HS diploma this way. A student may want both if a diploma is specifically required for gaining entrance into a future program such as the military, or other special program - (parents should check specific college or university policies for home schooled student applicants). Option 3) For Home schooled student who have not attended a public high school for at lest one semester, but still want to take the preparatory courses and the GED, and then also apply for their diploma: First, student and parents must go to the local public high school and register as a regular student, then 'immediately' fill out a new 4140 using Section A 4 (alternative ed) and put Kona Community School for Adults – GED and their address on the line. Second, immediately turn the 4140 form back in to the high school office & wait for the original to be processed and returned. Third, when original copy of the 4140 comes back, take it to the GED preparatory course registration. The student may then take both the preparatory courses and the GED; and, after passing all sections of the GED, file for their high school diploma. For students who want to take the preparatory courses in the Spring and the GED in May (then file for their diploma), they must: #1. go to the local high school office during the first week of December to initiate the process stated in Option 3 above - (it is important that this procedure be done very early in December in order to give the DOE time to process the new 4140 and return the original to the student in time to enroll in the Spring preparatory classes); #2. take the processed 4140 with them to the GED preparatory course registration, which is usually in mid January - (hopefully, the DOE returns your processed 4140 back to you in time); #3. take the 'Mandatory Placement Assessment' which is scheduled for later in January; #4. commence the GED preparatory courses, scheduled for January through May - (note - these courses count as the required one semester of public school); #5. take the GED exam, usually scheduled for May; upon successful completion of all 5 parts of the exam, students may then file for their diploma. * NOTE: Students who opt for the Fall preparatory classes, with the intent of taking the GED in December, need to go to the local high school to register for school and initiate the process stated in Option 3 above during the Spring of the current school year - (you will need to check with the Kona Community School for Adults for the Fall schedule). *Or, if a student just wants to take the GED exam, and not take the preparatory classes or file for a diploma: student must be 16 years old with a current photo ID; they must present a processed copy of 4140(Section B); and they must come to the registration prepared to pay $75 - cash or check only. Registration for the GED only is currently scheduled for the first two weeks of February, with the GED test itself scheduled for two evenings later in February (6:00-10:00PM). Remember the GED consists of 5 separate exams. Reading, Writing, Math (algebra & geometry), Social Studies, and Science. |
